What is high blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries (blood vessels). Blood pressure rises and falls throughout the day. When the pressure stays elevated over time (greater than 140/90), it is then called high blood pressure or hypertension.
What does a blood pressure reading convey to you?
A blood pressure reading lets you know if your blood pressure is normal, low or elevated. It consists of two numbers (systolic pressure and diastolic pressure) that indicate the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries.
Why should blood pressure be controlled?
High blood pressure causes the heart to work too hard. It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
How can it be controlled?
High blood pressure is controlled by medication that is prescribed by the physician; and also by making lifestyle changes such as following a healthy eating plan, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, reducing sodium intake and drinking alcohol in moderation.
Can exercise lower high blood pressure?
Yes. Exercise is now recognized as an important aspect in controlling high blood pressure. Regular low-impact aerobic exercise can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure by an average of 10mm Hg.
What kind of exercise is recommended?
Endurance exercises such as low-impact aerobics, walking, cycling and swimming are recommended. The frequency recommended is 4 to 6 days a week of 20 to 40 minutes duration. Exercise should begin with a gradual warm-up lasting for 10 minutes.
Heavy resistance weight training exercises are not recommended as they can elevate blood pressure; do weight-training exercises using light resistance.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). This virus causes deterioration of the immune system and depletion of the body’s energy reserves to fight infection and disease.
How is HIV transmitted?
The most common mode of transmission worldwide is sexual intercourse. Other common modes are contaminated blood, contaminated needles, and transmission from mother to child during birth or through breastfeeding.
Athletics and HIV/AIDS: Is it contagious?
No evidence exists for a risk of transmission of HIV when infected persons without bleeding wounds engage in sports or exercise. Athletes infected with HIV should be allowed to participate in all competitive sports.
- There is no medical or public health justification for testing or screening for HIV infection prior to participation in sports activities. HIV testing is voluntary.
- Olympic sports with the greatest risk include boxing, tae kwon do and wrestling. Each coach or athletic trainer should receive training in how to clean skin and equipment surfaces exposed to blood.
